How do you keep coops warm in the winter? Insulation, heat lamps, etc.? Are your chickens kept in the coop full-time over winter?

Here is a really interesting blog entry about using hay bales for insulation and bedding with a "hoop house!"

http://sugarmtnfarm.com/blog/2005/12/winter-hen-coop.html

This sounds very smart to me.

I use heat lamps. Whe the weather is not really cold and there is not lots of snow on the ground I let the girls out as they seem to really appreciate it. Otherwise I do worry about them getting frost bite,

I use hay bales around coop to keep draft down.A small draft is good to keep air flow moving. Also heat lamps will keep the girls warm enough to keep laying most of the time.

Hey,

I'm located in Atlanta so even of it gets to 10 degrees here on occasion our chickens do just fine. I know it's a valid concern up north. I often remind people that chickens have been domesticated since about 6000BC and they seem to be doing just fine. Just my 2 cents worth.

We used a single heat lamp in the coop. It was a small coop - for only six chickens. They were fine. I should probably mention we live in Virginia. The winters are mild.

I didnt understand how the hay bales worked really, but I do plan on building a hoop house for guineas, and other exotic fowl in the future.

I have a 10X12 Coop, Twenty chickens in it, some being in seperate cages, and I only need one red heat lamp. I also used the spray crack filler so any cold air cant get in, and stuffed straw down the sides to keep heat in.

Hi,
I saw your post. I want to express some words. Whenever you constructing a chicken coop, weather condition are extremely important, well insulated wall because bird can't eat them, use ceramic lamp for heating in winter season.
Thanks
Addie
