Homes for Haiti

The earthquake in Haiti may have occurred four months ago, but the process of rebuilding has barely begun. Even though the disaster has dropped off the media radar, thousands of people are still homeless, living in tent cities and dangerous, half-collapsed buildings. To make matters worse, the Haitian rainy season is in full swing. Take a look at this video to see what happens when a makeshift tarp roof tries to take on rainfall.

Horizon Structures wants to help, and we want to partner with you to accomplish it. We have coordinated with a local 501(c)(3) group to erect our 8 x 12 shelter kits for the homeless in Haiti. It may not be fancy to us, but a stable floor, solid roof, and lockable door make a world of difference for

those living on dirt, under bed sheets, and without walls. Your donation of $600 buys a shelter kit—that’s only $6.25 per square foot to provide a real home. By comparison, another proposal for Haiti housing comes in at a staggering $22 per square foot.

Our own Dave Zook, president of Horizon Structures, went down to Carrefour, just outside Port-au-Prince, to oversee the first shipment of fifty sheds. The living conditions are still unbearable, he says of visiting a tent city, “and people have their cots up on cinder blocks to keep them off the ground. We are so blessed in this country, and we hope people will unite with us to give back.”

Rebuilding Haiti properly will take years, but families can’t wait that long for shelter. They need the basics now.dollar_bill

A Mountainous Occasion: New Coop Kit Model

alpine_coop_side alpine_coop_backalpine_coop_openpower_drill

We are thrilled to introduce a new coop model: the Alpine. But don’t let the name fool you, this is our smallest and lightest coop yet. The Alpine is also our most economical coop—and it’s available as an easy-to-assemble kit, making your dollars go even further! Here are some more reasons to love the Alpine:

• The cute little A-frame house comes with a run to attach, making it unnecessary to fuss over moving your coop and run separately. The run also has its own door, so you can get at your hens from outside.

• The entire side panel of the coop opens on a hinge, making the Alpine a snap to clean.

• You can choose your own colors for the Duratemp siding.

• The Alpine comes with two outside-access nest boxes and a 4’ roost bar; it is 3 ½’ tall x 4’ wide (at the base) x 9 ¾’ long (a 4’ house and a 5 ¾’ run), making it perfect for about four chickens.

Contemplating a guest or in-law’s suite? Extra “hang out" space? Office room? Client lounge? Staff lodging? Add finished living quarters in the top of your Horizon garage or barn! We can insulate and finish the inside, installing welcoming wood laminate floors and beaded plywood walls. Then we can top it off with French doors and a deck. Finish a space as small as 288 square feet to as large as 2,160 square feet (or more!). Design it how you want; the possibilities are endless.

New Backyard Barn Models

welsh_barn

We have added TWO new models to our Backyard Barn Series! First is our smallest model to date, the Welsh. Distinguished from the pack by its single-unit delivery, the Welsh eliminates the need to bring out two separate trucks, as with the larger models. Coming in at 12 x 36, this quaint barn has two stalls and an aisle, and it’s available as a single story or with a gambrel loft. Click HERE to see more and to check out the one we set up on our lot, complete with decorative stone front and overhang!

thoroughbred_barn

Our other new model is the Thoroughbred. As the only Backyard Barn model with a full center aisle, the 36 x 24 Thoroughbred is almost exactly like our regular high profile or low profile modular barns—but with even less set-up and $$$! It comes with four 12 x 12 areas which you can design like all our barns, mixing and matching stalls, tack room, open area, or wash room to suit your needs. It can also come with or without a loft. Click HERE for more information.
