Benefits of a Modular Barn

What would it cost to construct a four-stall center aisle horse barn with a wash stall, tack/feed room and hayloft on your property? How much time would it take? Some contractors will typically quote you between $70-$90k... and weeks or months to get the job done.

But now there is a new, less-expensive shortcut. It's the modular barn. Delivered as two or three pre-built sections, these structures cost, on average, about 30% less than "stick built" and take only a few days to put up. The kicker? No one can tell the difference.

Horizon Structures 5 stall barn with overhang

This 1,200 sqft. barn, with 5 stalls, tack room and
8' overhang is less than $40k.

Modular, or pre-fab, means that your structures is delivered FULLY ASSEMBLED, and READY FOR SAME-DAY USE. Larger barns are delivered in several finished sections. Our 2-4 man crew joins the pieces and your horses move in. Total time: less than a week!

You CAN'T tell the difference between stick-built & modular!

At Horizon Structures, each barn is also built-to-order. You don't have to worry about any cookie-cutter work. Customization is limited only by your imagination!

Loft or No Loft?

One of the first choices you'll make in your barn design process is where to store your hay. Do you want overhead or ground-level storage? Both choices have advantages and disadvantages (...& we have barn styles to accommodate either preference!).

LOFT?

Horizon Structures Backyard Barn

Our lofts include a gable door for hay elevator access on one end and a gable window for fresh air and light on the other. Consider adding gable vents and/or a ridge vent for extra ventilation. Our lofts also include a full-size wooden staircase complete with balusters and a railing to make getting up and down safer and easier than a ladder. Choose a partial loft or opt for a hinged trap door so you can drop hay to the lower level instead of carrying to down the stairs.

NO LOFT?

Some people prefer to store hay away from the barn to reduce the potential for fire hazard. Foregoing a loft also eliminates the need to climb stairs to reach your hay, making unloading and storage easier. If you decide to keep only a week's worth of hay in the barn and store the bulk of it further away, a smaller ground level storage area probably makes more sense than a loft. Likewise, ground-level hay storage may suit you if you have only a few horses. Be sure to keep the hay on a wooden floor or wood pallets; a concrete floor or the bare ground encourages moisture and rot.

One of our horse barn specialists, Nicole, advises: "If you don't have a loft, it's a good idea to rework the design of your horse barn. It's a snap for any upstanding barn builder to turn one stall into hay storage. Designers can also find usable space within your barn to convert to storage without sacrificing a stall."
