All About Timber Frame

Timber Frame structures use a mortise and tenon joinery technique, which is when one piece of wood is placed into a hole in another piece of wood, creating a strong and durable joint. This helps resist the force from pressing down and causing breakage or weakening of the wood beams. The lumber used in Timber Frame structures – Douglas Fir Grade 1 or higher – is the strongest in the forest, since it is considered FOCH. FOCH refers to “free of the center of the tree”, meaning timber is milled away from the heart of the tree, resulting in less splitting and cracking, compared to timber milled from the center of the tree.

Based on its use of materials and building technique, the Timber Frame style is incredibly durable and built to be a long-lasting structure. Its beauty is unmatched as the wood is portrayed without any paint, but is rather stained or left in its natural state. Due to its expert build, higher-grade materials, and the technique used, a Timber Frame structure tends to be priced higher than other products. This price is easily justified for the knowledge and experience our Amish craftsmen have in building these stunning structures.

The Beauty of Timber Frame

What Makes Timber Frame Different?

Timber Frame differs from a normal building due to its appearance, longevity, integrity, architecture, cost, and amount of labor and expertise that goes into construction. Our Amish craftsmen have the knowledge and experience to build Timber-Frame structures to ensure a well-built and beautiful horse barn or pavilion. Both of these structures show the gorgeous exposed beams, commonly seen in Timber Frame, and the skilled technique used in the construction.
