Why a Combination Chicken Coop is the Smartest Choice for Backyard Flocks
You’ve always wanted to have your own chickens and now you’re finally bringing that desire to life. As part of the process of making your dream a reality, you’re doing your homework, seeing to all the details needing your attention, making all the proper decisions and crossing items off your ‘to do’ list. Doing so ensures you’ll realize your chicken-keeping dreams AND achieve THE BEST possible outcome for your new flock.
An inevitable part of this process – perhaps even more important than ‘how many?’ and ‘which breed?’ – is deciding ‘where’ They will live. Chicken coop choices abound, and we know you’ve been diligently researching all available options. But, as important as it is to make the right choice regarding the optimum (inside) living conditions of the flock, it is equally important to make ideal choices regarding where your birds will be when they’re OUTSIDE the coop.
And this is why we want you to consider Horizon Structures’ Combination Coop’: chicken living quarters that INCLUDE a robust chicken run built right onto the coop creating an all-inclusive structure. An attached enclosure that carries the same quality and consistency of construction and materials as the coop creating a safe, seamless all-in-one unit for optimum chicken well-being and safety both inside AND out.
If you have the space and the means we highly recommend purchasing a Combination Coop rather than attempting to cobble together a chicken run and attaching it to your coop after the fact. The time saved, hassle avoided, and cost savings will yield a healthy return on investment for both you and the birds.
While we are not asserting our chicken runs (and coops) are guaranteed predator proof, we are saying it’s very likely your birds are safer in one than not. Fortunately, Horizon Structures coops and runs are designed and built with materials and features to deter predators. However, there are additional things YOU can do and measures you can take to further ensure the safety of your flock. Read more from Cobble Hill Farm, Garden Betty and Lisa Steele, Fresh Eggs Daily.
Additional benefits to the attached run component of the Combination Coop are:
Boosted Welfare, Behavior, & Egg Quality
- Enclosing coop and run in a self-contained structure allows hens to safely engage in natural routines like dust bathing, foraging, and stretching.
- This, in turn, reduces aggression and increases overall flock health—making them more active, less aggressive, and more content overall.
- Chickens with access to varied forage tend to produce eggs with improved nutritional profiles (e.g., more omega-3s and vitamin E); hobbyist-kept flocks also show better feather condition and vitality.
- Potential for composting underneath: Elevated run space offers shade or foraging spots, and droppings can compost naturally under the coop.
Enhanced Comfort & Safety Features
- Seamless all-in-one design: Integrated coop and run under one continuous roof, offering weather protection in one cohesive structure.
- Raised and elevated structure: Keeps the hen house dry, improves air circulation, provides shade underneath, and helps deter burrowing predators and pests.
- Heavy-duty, predator-resistant mesh: The run uses 1″ × 2″ vinyl-coated metal mesh—virtually chew-proof and weather-resistant.
- Flexible size range: Ideal for flocks of 3 to 60 hens, combining compact footprint with generous run space.
In short, Horizon Structures’ Combination Chicken Coop is an outstanding value—not only functionally, but also aesthetically and practically—positioning it as a compelling option for anyone serious about backyard flock keeping.
Take a Look Inside our Chicken Coop...
Large enough for you to easily step up inside the coop for cleaning or tending your birds. But, you really don’t need to go inside. The way this coop is designed is so you can reach all areas of the interior from just outside the door.
The hinged drop panel, on the back of the coop, can be left open to increase fresh air and natural light inside the coop. The vinyl-coated mesh covering the opening ensures predators won’t get in and chickens won’t get out. When the weather turns cold and wet, simply latch the panel right to keep the chicken coop interior snug and dry. Hens and chickens stay safe and secure in this all-in-one coop and run.
Add wheels to your coop!
Moving your chicken coop house just got easier! Here you can see the Combination Chicken Coop with wheels to make it portable.
Powder-coated metal wagon chassis includes handle and 4 pneumatic tires. Steer the front tires with the handle for easy maneuverability. The tractor chassis takes the place of the fixed, pressure treated wood legs / base. The 2 front tires swivel for easier turning.
Use your riding lawn mower or an ATV to make the move easier.
Here we’ve lifted the coop up on a forklift so you can see how the wheels are attached. See a close up of the tire.
Chicken Coop Exterior Features
Chickens enjoy the benefits of fresh air and sunshine in the ample wire mesh enclosed run. Additional space is available under the coop for foraging or resting in the shade. You’ll feel confident and at ease knowing your flock is safely confined from the time they emerge from the coop in the morning until they retire there at night. The sturdy roof of this self-contained chicken coop garden combo protects birds from blazing sun or driving rain, snow or sleet.
Pressure treated wood legs and base keep our large chicken coop elevated. This provides a shady spot for the hens as well as keeping the inside of the chicken coop houses dry and cooler in summer. Being raised off the ground may even deter some predators.
*Our coops are solidly built with a number of design elements and features meant to deter predators. However, we do not assert that they are ‘predator proof.’ We recommend learning all you can about predators in your area and taking every precaution possible to protect your hens both inside the coop and outside, if applicable, in their chicken run.
